IVC Filter Retrieval Complications Have Been Known For Years

Physicians may be ignoring the warnings from the UK and the US regarding the dangers of leaving an IVC filter in place too long

Thursday, December 30, 2021 - The government of the United Kingdom issued a Medical Devices Alert, its most stern warning back in 2013, addressing the life-threatening complications that could be expected during IVC filter retrieval. The UK government warned physicians that to "retrieve the device as soon as possible once it is no longer clinically required." The US Food and Drug Administration has warned that an IVC filter should only be used as a last resort when all attempts at chemical blood thinners have failed to stop blood clots from forming. The FDA also has warned surgeons that the filter should be removed at the earliest possible opportunity. IVC retrieval procedures are the same as inserting one into the inferior vena cava, only in reverse. A small laparoscopic incision is made and a catheter inserted up to where the IVC filter resides. The surgeon is guided by an x-ray to the filter and then grabs the hood on the top of the filter designed for retrieval. Problems occur when the device becomes encapsulated in scar tissue and is impossible to remove without tearing the IVC, or breaking the filter into pieces. Those pieces will then be free to travel to the heart or lungs and become lodged there making retrieval too risky to attempt. Dozens of Bard IVC filter patients have filed Bard IVC filter lawsuits claiming that a design defect in the medical device has caused their life-threatening injuries.

The difficulties in retrieving an embedded IVC filter have led Royal Phillips to manufacture a laser designed specifically to safely cut away the IVC tissue that surrounds the device so that it can be safely removed. The laser received fast-track FDA approval as a life-saving medical device echoing the serious nature of an embedded IVC filter. When a surgeon fails to remove the filter, the device will continue to trap blood clots until it becomes so full that the device itself will start to throw blood clots, dooming the patient. The UK government warning highlighted the serious nature of the adverse incidences that have been reported to them. "... is aware of a high prevalence of retrieval-related complications, through published papers and anecdotal reports. For example, complications have arisen during attempted retrieval of filters with massive trapped thrombus, or which have undergone significant tilting, caval wall penetration, or loss of structural integrity while in situ" Despite the warnings from the UK and the US governments Bard has failed to warn doctors and patients of the serious problems with IVC filter retrieval. Adding insult to injury, experts believe that the IVC filter does nothing to help patients that are experiencing blood clotting problems due to traumatic injury or surgery. If you or a loved one have experienced injury or has had a loved one die as a result of a defective IVC filter, you may consider speaking with an Bard IVC filter lawyer and filing a claim.
