Bard IVC filter complications grew as more devices were implanted

Saturday, February 26, 2022 - The use of inferior vena cava (IVC) filters by physicians has increased exponentially since 2000, and so have the complications and the severity of the side effects of using the device. Peer-reviewed medical publications have highlighted the life-threatening complications that IVC filters cause. IVC filters have been used by doctors to trap blood clots in high-risk individuals since the 1970s, and the procedure usually goes without a hitch. Problems started occurring in mass when a particular brand of filter, models made by CR Bard, were found to have a propensity to tilt within the IVC and cause the retrieval hoop on the back end of the device to puncture the IVC (caval wall) causing internal bleeding, infection, and severe pain. Bard IVC filter complications, more than other brands, are likely to cause serious injuries and death. Many individuals that have suffered from a tilted or fractured IVC filter have filed Bard IVC filter lawsuits seeking monetary compensation from the manufacturer and others. According to DrugWatch.com, "Lawsuits filed in federal court allege that defects in the design of IVC filters manufactured by Bard and Cook make them more likely fracture, migrate, tilt or perforate the inferior vena cava. In some cases, when the devices break, pieces can travel through the body, damaging the heart, lungs, and other organs." IVC filter victims have been awarded more than $9 million in jury awards so far and that number is likely to increase.

A tilted IVC filter retrieval hoop could be encapsulated in scar tissue making retrieval difficult or impossible. Irretrievable IVC filters have become so prevalent that the FDA has recently approved the use of lasers to assist in the device's surgical removal. Doctors who try and remove an IVC filter using the same laparoscopic, minimally invasive surgery that was used to insert it, could be caught off guard by not being able to remove the device that has become embedded into the IVC wall. Surgeons have been known to use force and yank on the filter to pull it out. Doing so often damaged the caval wall necessitating immediate emergency open surgery to stop the internal bleeding and repair the IVC.

IVC filter tilting and the resultants set of complications have been widely reported by peer-reviewed medical studies. According to an article published recently in The Journal of Thrombosis and haemostasis, "Major filter complications include filter tilt, filter fracture, filter embolization and movement, IVC occlusion, and IVC penetration." The paper stresses that physicians should monitor their IVC patients regularly for the signs of IVC filter complications. The FDA warns that IVC filters should be treated as temporary solutions and not left inside a patient indefinitely. Researchers warn against using an IVC filter prophylactically as is often the case. Scientists stress that IVC filters should only be used in patients that have the highest risk of developing life-threatening blood clots, and not used routinely in anticipation of them.
