Surgeons who fail to tell their patients that the IVC filter is only a temporary solution have trained to implant the device but have no idea how to remove it

Tuesday, August 31, 2021 - Experts are speaking up about the lack of accurate information forthcoming from doctors that advise their patients they need to have a retrievable IVC filter implanted. Some experts that have studied the device and spoken with IVC filter recipients are coming forth and saying doctors deliberately overlook the Bard IVC Filter complications of causing permanent injury or death that these devices present. Maybe patients hear what they want to hear. Patients interviewed after having IVC filter implantation say they were told the device was safe. They have no idea that it is only a temporary solution to a permanent blood clot problem. The fact is that the IVC filter has a high failure rate which only increases over time to approach 100%. All IVC filters may eventually break into pieces, lacerate the inferior vena cava and migrate to other parts of the body to injure vital internal organs. Thousands of American's lives could now be at risk from the faulty medical device. The Bard IVC brand of filters is at the center of the controversy. Patients have filed Bard IVC filter lawsuits claiming the company has failed to warn them of the risks inherent in the device's design. One of the more common but less publicized risks of the Bard IVC filter is that it could cause a heart attack or stroke even if they work as intended.

The Bard IVC filter is a spider-like device that is intended to trap small blood clots as they form harmlessly in the larger arteries before they can travel and block the blood flow in the smaller veins. The filter could trap many blood clots and itself increase the number and size of the clots it traps. Also, if the IVC filter is not removed within 60 days the clots could grow larger and potentially break free from the filter and block blood flow. When you add the clotting risk to the potential of the IVC filter to break into small, unretrievable metal shards, it is hard to find a good reason to use the device. Some lawsuits have been filed by IVC filter patients that have been told their device must be left in place permanently. Doctors think the risks of performing major invasive surgery to dislodge the filter from the scar tissue in which it has become encases is not worth the risks. Doctors that implanted the IVC filter have no training in its inevitable removal. Most who attempt the removal procedure wind up tugging so hard that the device breaks into pieces sending metal shrapnel through the artery to injure the heart or lungs. Sandip Bhattacharya, Co-Owner at Alivio Healthcare Pvt. Ltd. writing in LinkedIn that experts knew years ago that the device had little chance of succeeding, "In March 2013, JAMA Internal Medicine journal questioned the effectiveness of IVC filters, noting that less than 10% of the study patients had successful removal of the devices and 8% of IVC filter patients developed pulmonary embolism despite the device."
