An inferior vena cava filter may work as advertised, but the patient's life is at risk when it comes time to be removed

Saturday, September 11, 2021 - A medical device manufacturer in the Netherlands estimates that millions of people will need to have their Bard IVC filter removed over the next decade using laser surgery. The company agrees with other medical experts that the IVC filter is a temporary solution to be removed after a short time. If the IVC filter works too well, it will trap so many clots and become a threat. Blood clots trapped by the IVC filter's spider-like tentacles will naturally grow larger and break free to create super clots that can cause stroke, heart attack, or pulmonary embolism.

Doctors that have implanted a Bard IVC filter device shy away from attempting to remove it due to the difficulty and complications that have previously occurred. The Bard filter is a delicate, spider-like device used by patients that do not respond well to blood thinner medication. The IVC filter stops blood clots from reaching the lungs, heart, or brain. The device is ingenious in that it works very well in trapping blood clots, however, the device requires removal to not become a source of blood clots itself. Surgeons that attempt to remove the filter may use excessive force and break the filter into pieces that can travel through the veins and become irretrievably lodged in a major organ. Patients that have suffered unsuccessful filter removal surgery have sought the guidance of a Bard IVC filter lawyer. Bard IVC filter plaintiffs seek lump-sum monetary compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been making Bard IVC filter warnings since 2010. The problem with laser surgery is that few surgeons can use lasers to perform delicate internal microscopic surgery. Hundreds of hours of experience are needed to learn how to cut the IVC device away from the scar tissue that has encapsulated it without weakening or perforating the artery. Scar tissue left behind can be a magnet for future blood clots to form as the smooth interior arterial walls become rough. Using a laser to excise moles or cauterize lacerations on the outside of the body is one thing, but using them within the body is quite another. A recent study of around 100 IVC filter patients that required filter removal found that lasers effectively removed the scar tissue that encapsulated the device. A study in AHA Journal cited the risks that are present when using an IVC filter and how they can be mitigated. The study began, "Although chronically implanted inferior vena cava filters may result in filter-related morbidity, there is currently no routine option for removing such filters when they become firmly embedded along the vena cava endothelium," and concluded, "Excimer laser-assisted removal is effective in removing embedded inferior vena cava filters refractory to standard retrieval and high force. This method can be safely used to prevent and alleviate filter-related morbidity."
