Tuesday, February 22, 2022 - The use of IVC filters to trap blood clots in patients that have had surgery or experienced traumatic injuries has skyrocketed. "In 1999, there were approximately 49,000 IVC filters placed in the US, and in 2012, this number is estimated to reach over 250,000," according to EVToday.com. Experts believe that the medical device may have been overused in situations that were not life-threatening. Doctors may advise implanting an IVC filter to catch blood clots as a preventative measure when blood thinner drugs would have been more effective.
